It is said that there are ten million people who speak the Swedish language. In Sweden alone, there are only about 5.5% of people who use the language and the number has been consistently dwindling over the years. Perhaps the second most pressing reason why you should learn the Swedish language is that you have a new Swedish wife and you are in desperate need to be at ease in her family's company. You can also learn the language in an attempt to learn something new while doing something that's sensible on your free time. Maybe you have a short stint to Finland where majority of the people speak Swedish or as simple as learning any North Germanic language. Remember that Swedish is descendant language of the Old Norse and the spoken language in Scandinavia when the Vikings were still around. You might find it interesting that the Swedish language may in fact be easier to learn than other languages as it has a structure that is pretty much the same as English. It has two genders, a distinction of singular and plurals, and fewer inflections. The basic sentence structure, however, is subject, verb, and object. In fact, it might be of interest to you that they do have a king and a queen and the rest of the royal family, but the difference is that they are still ruled by the government. Sweden can be proud of its many Noble laureates and if you want to read their works in the original language they were written, you simply have to study the language itself. You don't have to be a Linguistics major to have interest in learning Swedish. Maybe it heightens your interest to know that the language is almost in the same category as that of Latin, and remember Latin has been dead since the twelfth century but its influence has continues to be seen even in the recent lingua franca. So whether you take part in the language's history in learning it or you simply have to because of a personal need, what concerns you as the language learner is how to learn it with fun.
